Who knows where the difficult road goes? I met a man, a woman, child, two dogs Saw the engine of a train without the patience for the pulling In an empty station full of epilogues Light on, at the end of the tunnel where I roam Hand reaches out, to compromise my solitude and doubt Waking with old anxious thoughts and water in the tent I will arise to meet the morning in the Ozarks where I spent The night in prayer Sit outside the Free Will Baptist with a journal and an atlas In Missouri they may ask if You are traveling alone But listen to the Spirit, boy The rain is here not to destroy But reckon with your newfound joy The true King to enthrone

The Kingdom is in Kansas And the best of all our plans is To drive on till the evening 'Cause the lake is just for leaving Tonganoxie, I don't even know How to say your name But the sun is going down below So I'll make it plain Our Father gives and clothes And I am yours for just tonight But we are his, our Father knows Our bodies in the dying light I'll come home broken And you'll stay that way too But praise the Lord, a place to sleep Tonight I found you

How do we carry all our people? I don't think we often set them down You rode with me halfway through Kansas Stopped for coffee, stuck around At the Super-8 just off I-80 Felt lonely so I wrote my friends Then a cigarette (it's my crutch lately) And it led to prayer and help he sends Wondering: are you bored with this middle country? Riding high on Gulf Coast prayers? I know that I'm not the sole loney Sinner seeking solace there I brought 'em with me to Nebraska Passing through, like everyone You'll meet me here, just as I asked ya And here you'll stay, as you've always done The postcards will go out tomorrow: Chattanooga, Cincinnati, home And I'll drive on to Colorado Lonely still, but not alone Are we bored with this middle country? Fixed our eyes on coastal cares But fruited plains to feed the hungry Answers for our coastal prayers Yours is the day Yours also the night

It could've come when I was still surrounded by my friends It could've come next week when I'll be safe in Oregon But here, a thousand miles from all I've known and all I'll know The message I'd anticipated trapped me in the snow In Idaho Springs, Colorado I scrambled through the mountains on just one good leg and prayer To seek whatever comfort could be found in cool fresh air But coming down the mountain ain't no metaphor to me And in all this stunning beauty it's just heartbreak I can see In Idaho Springs, Colorado Pacing by the lake and crying out for some relief A pastor's word: "In pain is where we find our true belief" I know I've done as bad to her as she has done to me But her arms, and not the mountain, is the place I'd rather flee Would it be a passing comfort with a longer road ahead? Would it be a firmer foothold and a place of love instead? In Bywater, New Orleans

We've heard the sins of the fathers are visited on the sons To the seventh, the seventh, the seventh, the seventh generation But here, with the Temple, the beer (Red Rock Brewing Co) May it also be true: The blessing of he who welcomes the stranger to echo to His children, their children, their children To the seventh generation And to eternity

There's a road leads south from Boise Driving down into the quiet On the night before the time change Let us sit out here awake And start a fire in the canyon, Break the silence with a song: "Oh, ain't the beautify of the land strange?" Can you feel enough to make? Brother, are you satisfied? Brother, soak the glory in Pain will come, will kill our pride, so Bless the struggle once again Are we all just at the mercy of our Maker? In the Ark or in the flood zone Or the canyon where the river cut a path Oh, may we all be at the mercy of our Maker In the throne room if the canyon is the flood zone Or if he spares us all his wrath Brother, are you satisfied? Brother, soak the glory in Pain will come to kill our pride, so Bless the struggle once again Sit with me, brother, at the water's edge The angel will come to trouble it again He'll see through my fine speech and know that I'm a wretch He'll see through my good deeds to my endeavor's sin But when the angel came He ordered me away: "The healing waters are not for you. Go lie down with the lame And to the broken say: 'The healing waters are for you.'" Brother, don't be satisfied! Brother, soak the glory in God has come to kill our pride, so Bless the struggle once again
